With an altitude of 1,407 metres the Puy de Montchal is the youngest volcano in France: barely 7,000 years!
Lake Pavin is at its feet. Born from the explosions caused by the lava from the Puy de Montchal this lake, surrounded by a beautiful forest of beeches and conifers, has a diameter of 750 metres and measures more than 90 metres deep.
With an area of 600 m² the crater of the Puy de Montchal forms a clearing in the dense forest of conifers covering the Puy. The steep slopes of this very hollow crater are surprising. They are covered by a meadow full of flowers in summer.
